new year’s resolutions: past, present, & future

The concept of resolutions seems to be so controversial lately. It kind of has a bad reputation, like the flaky friend that is always late or never shows up. No one has faith in them anymore, so they don’t even bother to make a resolution. If you know you’re not going to keep at it, why make a promise to yourself? Personally, I believe in self improvement. Even if you don’t stick with it, at least you made the effort.

I stopped with the “get skinny” resolution last year. In fact, the first thing I ate on the first day of 2013 was a giant bagel with hazelnut cream cheese (my go-to hangover cure). I gave zero f*#ks. Of course, this was only one of three bagels the entire year (I don’t drink very much these days). Everything in moderation! Then I realized I had never completed my 2012 resolution, which was to start a blog. So in January 2013, the Pomegranate Bandit was born. Better late than never, right?

For 2014, I have one resolution. I’ve been through the weight loss journey, the blogging thing, and finding balance between healthy foods and not so health foods. There’s just one more part of my body I want to change: my brain.

2014 New Year’s Resolution: accepting myself

This year I want to work on self-acceptance. Over the past few years I’ve incorporated so many healthy habits into my life that I should be patting myself on the back. Instead, I just push myself to work harder and eat better. I want to accept that it’s okay to have jiggly thighs no matter how many lunges and squats I do. I need to stop comparing my body to others and stop beating myself up, because I’m NOT overweight, and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying ice cream as long as it’s not too much. I want to accept that I’ll never be the person that “just doesn’t like dessert” (come ON).

This resolution comes with sub-resolutions that will help me achieve my goal, or at least get closer to it. I want to start by going back to Bikram yoga, which I’ve been wanting to do for months now. I just haven’t gotten my butt over there yet. I also started doing this thing when I get jealous of something I see on a social media news feed: I just think of a reason why I shouldn’t be jealous. Example: someone posts a photo of their new car. Then I would say to myself, okay, self, you don’t have a car payment and now this person probably does, so Ha!

So that’s my plan. A little yoga, more positive thinking…and we’ll see what happens.

What’s your resolution going to be?

Resolving to lose a lot of weight for the new year can put a lot of pressure on you. Cutting out your favorite foods and putting yourself on a strict exercise regimen will just burn you out and set you up for failure. Instead, try baby steps. For example, if you drink a lot of soda, try drinking just one a day, then three a week, eventually one every once in a while. But first…

I’ll be spending the last night of 2013 in style as always. When 2000 hit and the funny glasses came out, my mom bought a pair every year and took a photo of my brother and I. These became fun party accessories once I was old enough to stay up past midnight… Hopefully I can find some before the party tonight. I hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year’s Eve celebration!
