formula for protein bars (or energy balls)

Homemade protein bars (or energy balls) are popping up all over the internet. There’s all different types…no bake, raw, vegan, gluten free, etc. You don’t need a recipe to make these, just the right ratios of certain ingredients and an imagination!

the protein bar formula

  1. Start with a base of old fashioned rolled oats. I find that the mixture will form better if you blend the oats first. You can also add ground flaxseed and protein powder, but these are optional.
  2. Next, mix in the “glue” of the recipe. This is what will hold it all together. Your options are dates, nut butter, or honey (or a combination of those choices). Pitted dates (blended in a food processor) work very well and taste sweet without adding sugar. Nut butter makes them taste like cookies, and the honey is very sweet but a little too loose on it’s own.
  3. Now add your extras: coconut, finely chopped nuts, chocolate chips, raisins, extract (I love adding almond extract!), cocoa powder, and anything else you want in there.
  4. Mix everything and add more “glue” until the mixture holds together. Form into balls or press into a baking pan and store in the refrigerator.
  5. Enjoy!

Remember, less is more. Always start with a small amount of what you’re adding, taste the mixture, and add more as needed.

Be creative and try new things! You’d be surprised at what you can come up with using the ingredients you have on hand. If you are looking for a recipe to get started, check out my homemade protein bars, only 123 calories each. Let me know how it works out!
